WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NCLEX EXAM
Format and Question Types
- Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT): The NCLEX-RN is delivered using CAT, which means the exam automatically adjusts the difficulty of questions based on your responses to previous ones. This personalized approach ensures that each test-taker receives questions that match their skill level, providing a more exact measure of their nursing qualification.
- Number of questions: The NCLEX-RN exam consists of a minimum of 85 questions and a maximum of 150 questions. The test ends when the computer is 95% confident in determining whether you have passed or failed, when you complete the maximum number of questions, or when the time limit is reached—whichever comes first.
- Time Limit: You have a maximum of 5 hours to complete the exam, which includes a tutorial. There are optional breaks.
- Question type: The NCLEX-RN exam includes different types of questions to test your nursing knowledge and critical thinking. Besides regular multiple-choice questions, you may also see Select All That Apply (SATA), Fill-in-the-blank for things like medicine doses, Ordered Response where you put steps in order, Hotspot where you click on a picture to answer, Matrix Multiple-Choice using tables, Drop-down options, and Bowtie questions that test real-life decision-making. These formats help measure your ability to think like a nurse in actual healthcare settings.
