All you need to know about the CBT exam
Nurses aspiring to work in the United Kingdom are required to pass the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Test of Competence. It is aimed at ensuring that foreign nurses have the competencies needed to practice safe and effective care within the UK healthcare environment.
And the exam includes two parts:
- Computer-based test: it's a multiple-choice test and can be taken at a Pearson VUE test centre available in India.
- Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): A practical nursing or midwifery examination. The OSCE can only be sat after successfully passing the CBT and is only available in the UK at a designated test centre.
CBT and OSCE can be taken in any order. Need to pass both exams within 2 years
Structure of the CBT exams
The CBT Exam has two parts
Numeracy
- Number of questions: 15 Questions
- Type: calculation-based
- Time: 30 minutes
- Score: 90%(14/15)
Clinical
- Number of questions: 100 (multiple choice questions)
- Type: Nursing theory
- Time: 2½ hours
- Score: 68%
Total duration: 3 hours
Location: Pearson VUE test centre worldwide
Attempts: 3 attempts per year

OSCE Examination
The OSCE is currently made up of 10 stations:
- Four APIE stations: Assess holistic patient care through a single scenario, following the nursing process (Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation).
- Four skills stations: Test clinical abilities like injections, wound care, and vital signs—often done in pairs.
- Two silent skills stations: Evaluate professional behavior, values, and documentation tasks such as fluid charts or scenario responses.
Location: Only be taken in a UK NMC-approved test centre
